Fine vs Chunky Glitter: Which One Should You Use?

Standing in front of a wall of glitter wondering which one to choose? You're not alone. The biggest question we get is whether to use fine or chunky glitter, and the answer depends on the look you're after. Here's everything you need to know.

What is fine glitter?

Fine glitter is made of tiny, evenly sized particles. It gives a smooth, even shimmer that covers a surface completely, almost like a sparkly paint.

Best for:

  • Covering whole surfaces evenly, like ornaments, tumblers and lettering
  • Detailed work and small designs
  • Mixing into resin for an all-over shimmer
  • Cards and paper crafts where you want crisp edges

What is chunky glitter?

Chunky glitter has bigger pieces, and our chunky mixes often combine several sizes, shapes and colours in one bag. Instead of a smooth finish, it gives texture, depth and that eye-catching, catch-the-light sparkle.

Best for:

  • Statement pieces where you want the glitter to be the star
  • Resin keychains, coasters and shakers where the pieces float and shine
  • Adding texture and dimension to Christmas decorations
  • Party decorations that need to be seen from across the room

Quick comparison

Fine glitter Chunky glitter
Finish Smooth and even Textured and dimensional
Coverage Full, solid coverage Scattered, standout sparkle
Great for Detail, lettering, full coverage Statement pieces, resin, texture
Sealing Easy to seal smoothly May need an extra coat to cover the bigger pieces

Our favourite trick: use both

For the most magical finish, layer them. Start with a base of fine glitter in a similar colour for full coverage, then sprinkle chunky glitter over the top. The fine glitter fills the gaps, and the chunky pieces add depth and sparkle. Try pairing a fine silver with a chunky iridescent mix for a snowy, frosted look on Christmas decorations.

Which should you choose?

  • Want a smooth, polished, all-over sparkle? Choose fine.
  • Want texture, drama and pieces that catch the light? Choose chunky.
  • Can't decide? Use both and layer them.
